Country risk and security

Understanding a country, a territory or a situation before investing, sending staff or signing a contract there

What is it?

Country risk analysis assesses the environment in which an organization wants to operate: political stability, security, corruption, legal framework, sanctions risk, reputation of local partners. Security is its operational extension: protecting people, sites and travel against malicious acts.

Like competitive intelligence, this profession relies on collecting reliable sources, cross-checking them and writing an analysis that supports a decision — whether to go, on what terms, with what precautions.

Who is it for? Companies expanding or exporting abroad, NGOs, organizations sending staff on assignment, investors, insurers, event organizers.

Use cases

Setting up abroad

Assessing a country or region before opening a subsidiary, an office or a worksite there.

Staff travel

Country profile, threat assessment, guidelines and response plan before an assignment in a sensitive area.

Local partner

Checking the reputation and connections of a local distributor, agent or partner.

Geopolitical monitoring

Regular monitoring of an area: elections, tensions, regulatory changes, sanctions.

Site security audit

Assessing the protection of an office, warehouse or residence and proposing proportionate measures.

Crisis management

Preparing procedures and supporting the organization during an incident (kidnapping, unrest, disaster).

How an assignment unfolds

Practices vary from one professional to another, but a serious assignment generally follows these steps:

1

Defining the need

Which country, which activity, which people are exposed, over what time frame?

2

Collection

Open sources, local press, institutional reports, networks of correspondents, feedback from the field.

3

Analysis

Ranking threats by likelihood and impact for the organization concerned.

4

Deliverable

Analysis note, country profile or audit report, with concrete, dated recommendations.

5

Follow-up

Updates as the situation evolves; operational support if needed.

Qualifications and framework

What we require: a registered business and professional liability insurance. Analysis and security consulting do not require a particular licence; however, private security services (close protection, guarding) are regulated — BSP licence in Quebec, CNAPS authorization in France — and are only listed for professionals who hold them.

Our checks are described in detail on the page How we verify.

Limits to be aware of

Good reflex: build risk analysis in from the start of the project, not the day before departure: that is when it can still change the schedule, the partner or the setup.

Rates

Each professional sets their rates according to the scope, urgency, country and technical complexity of the assignment. Seek & Find does not set these prices: always ask for a written quote detailing the method, the deliverable and the timeline.
